Greensboro, NC – In the first annual Zaxby’s MLK Tourney Town Showcase presented by Big Shots, many of North Carolina and South Carolina’s top teams and talent faced off in Greenbsoro, NC January 19, 2019 at Ben L. Smith HS. 

This event boasted 12 teams throughout North Carolina and South Carolina including over 50 rated Division 1 prospects.

Game Review

Moravian Prep 2020 6’9 Javarzia Belton named Game MVP with near triple double

Game 1: Moravian Prep (NC) def. Trinity Byrnes (SC) 83-57. Moravian Prep continued to make a statement as one of the hottest teams nationally with a win over SCISA runner up Trinity Byrnes. The star trio of Game MVP 2020 6’10 270 lb. Javarzia Belton (15 points, 8 rebounds, 8 blocks), high level 2020 6’8 wing Josh Hall (16 points), and hot division-1 2019 6’2 PG Caleb Burgess (St. Bonaventure, Hofstra, Towson top list) led the way. 2019 Kamari Scott scored game high 19 points for Moravian. 2020 Division 1 point guard Jordan Jones of Trinity Bynes is a quick lefty that can score off the bounce, finished with 19.

Word of God 2020 Josiah Shackelford Game MVP

Game 2: Word of God (NC) def. Ben L Smith (NC) 65-52. 2020 6’8 Josiah Shackelford was named game MVP scoring 16 points, 10 rebounds in the win. High motor forward finished with authority at the rim on several dump offs and drop steps. 2021 wing BJ Freeman (holds Penn State offer) scored 12 followed up by sharp shooting 2019 Max Farthing with 6. @BenLSmithBBall was led by high level 4-star 2020 wing Silas Mason who scored game high 21 showing his refined jumper. Hybrid 2020 6’7 forward Nick McMullen (recently offered by NC A&T) scored 9 points. ECU head coach Joe Dooley was courtside watching Silas Mason, who holds ECU offer.

UVA commit 2021 Carson McCorkle scored showcase high 33 points, hit 8 3-fgs.

Game 3: Greensboro Day (NC) def. Gray Collegiate (SC) 84-73. In a matchup of defending state champions in North Carolina and South Carolina in Greensboro Day (NCISAA Class 3-A 2018 Champs) versus Gray Collegiate (South Carolina 2A 2018 Champs), Greensboro Day held on for the win. Virginia commit, NC No. 1 2021 prospect Carson McCorkle lit it up hitting 8 3fg’s scoring 33 points, named game MVP. One of NC’s top available forward 2019 6’7 PF Nicholas Evtimov scored 24 points in a variety of ways. 2019 available PG Austin Inge hit some big shots down the stretch to pull away. Gray Collegiate (SC) was led by their star backcourt of available point guards 2019 PG Khalil Robinson (20 points) and 2019 PG Tommy Bruner (11 points). Each hold several low-mid major offers. High Point Tubby Smith and ECU Joe Dooley were courtside watching.

Dartmouth signee Paul Hudson named game MVP for Charlotte Christian

Game 4: Charlotte Christian (NC) def. Faith Assembly (NC) 82-48. Charlotte Christian came into the event the No. 3 team in NC and showed why with a win over Faith Assembly. They since have jumped to the No.1 spot with a Carmel Christian loss. 2019 Dartmouth commit Paul Hudson was named game MVP scoring 16 points including several emphatic dunks. 2019 CG Efosa-U-edosomwan is a 2-way guard that is attracting several high level D2 programs finished with 14 points, followed by sharp shooting, high academic 2019 SG Seth Bennett with 10 points. App State commit JC Tharrington is the leader at the point guard spot that sets the tone of D and can dagger it with the jumper or deliver the pass to his scorers. Faith Assembly (NC) Josh Tyler led his team with 21 points.

Breakout performer at showcase, 2020 high level Josh Massey named game MVP

Game 5: United Faith (NC) def. Freedom Christian (NC) 75-57. The breakout performer in the showcase came from United Faith 2020 6’6 Josh Massey scoring 28 points in win. The springy lengthy lefty has high major intangibles with a silky jumper from distance, mid-range game and above the rim athleticism in traffic. Massey glides on the floor and impressed me as one of the top players in the showcase. He currently holds offers from Illinois and Eastern Washington. Look for that to grow quickly as the spring approaches. Evansville signee PG Marcus Henderson ran the show and shot the 3 scoring 11 points. He will be a good fit in the MVC. Freedom Christian 2019 6’8 stretch forward Dusan Dordevic hit a number of 3’s scoring 13 points.

High Point Christian 2021 PG KJ Garrett named Game MVP in win

Game 6: High Point Christian (NC) def. Wesleyan Chrisitian (NC) 65-61. Game MVP: 2021 PG KJ Garrett controlled the flow of the game scoring 19 points, showing why he’s one of the top PG’s in NC’s 2021 class. 2020 bouncy forward Zach Shumate added 18 off rim to rim runs, back to basket moves and pick and pop action hitting the 3fg. Sharp shooting 2020 G Landon Sutton finished with 13 and was a floor leader for his team. Sutton has had several 30+ point games for HPCA. For WCA, 2020 6’6 wing Kaleb Brooks had the hot hand scoring 19 points hitting 5 3’s. Springy 2020 4/3 combo Luke Davis also tallied 19 points.

Virginia commit Carson McCorkle scores 33 points

Carson McCorkle, 2020 6’3 SG Greensboro Day (NC). The Virginia commit put on a shooting clinic with 21 points in first half, finishes with 33 points on 8 made 3’s for Greensboro Day earning Game MVP honors in win vs. Gray Collegiate. Big Shots NC 2020 No. 1 prospect.

Moravian Prep 2020 Josh Hall is a high level prospect

Josh Hall 2020 6’8 SF Morvian Prep (NC). The lengthy 2020 No. 5 prospect in NC showed why he’s one of the hottest prospects in the state regardless of class. A fluid slasher that can score at all 3-levels finished with 16 points, 12 in the first half. Has pro talent that continues to get better each day at Moravian. Offers: Providence, High Point, St. Bonaventure, Marshall, VCU, Fullerton, Morehead St, Mount St Marys, CCU, New Orleans, Presbyterian, Rider, Hampton, Kennesaw St, Ga Southern, Eastern Michigan.

Javarzia Belton 2020 6’10 270 lbs C Moravian Prep (NC). Top 15 prospect in NC 2020 class proved to be the best shot blocker in the state and a close second behind 2019 Kadin Shedrick (UVA) in the category overall in NC. Belton has the biggest body in the state and similar shot blocking instincts of WVU star shot blocker Sag Konate meet you at the rim with 2 hands without fouling. Was well on his way to a triple double with 15 points 8 rebounds 8 blocks through 3 quarters but didn’t play in the fourth. Holds offers from UNLV, Charleston plus interest from Wake Forest, Arkansas, Georgetown. Game MVP in win vs Trinity Byrnes.

Paul Hudson, 2019 6’6 F Charlotte Christian (NC), Dartmouth signee had several poster dunks in this one scoring 16 points in the win. NC 2019 Top 40 prospect has a 7-feet plus wingspan allowing him to switch 1-4, 1-5 actions defensively and creates a mismatch at the offensive end with his skill set and speed. What a get for Dartmouth in landing a winner and one of NC’s most versatile forwards in the 2019 class. @paul_hudson19

KJ Garrett 2021 6’0 PG High Point Christian (NC), KJ is a floor general that possesses the natural point guard skills as the game flows through him and usually that leads to him team winning. He was named game MVP scoring 19 points in the win vs. rival Wesleyan Christian, showing why he’s one of the top PG’s in NC’s 2021 class.

Nick Evtimov 2019 6’7 PF Greensboro Day (NC), One of NC’s top available 2019 forwards impressed with his motor and versatility scoring around the rim and putting the ball on the deck attacking slower bigs. Silas Mason, 2020 6’6 SF Ben L Smith (NC). Silas scored 21 points showing off the smooth refined stroke running off several 3fgs and mid-range pull ups. Although the free throws weren’t falling he was relentless at getting to the rim finishing with 21 points against a defense keyed in on him. He currently ranks as the No. 3 prospect in NC 2020 class holding 15+ Offers: Florida, OK St, Charlotte, Houston, Hampton, WCU, UNCG, ECU, DePaul, Georgetown, Wichita St, High Pt, Providence, ODU. Joe Dooley and Tubby Smith were courtside watching Mason.

Caleb Burgess 2019 Moravian Prep, JC Tharrington 2019 Charlotte Christian, Marcus Henderson 2019 United Faith: These 3 point guards are winners that led their team to the wins and are leaders of their teams in so many ways. Vocal, defensively, offensively and when the game is on the line they want the ball in their hands to make the play. They’ve done it on the circuit and with their high school teams and will be that player to do it on the next level. Tharrington (App State) and Henderson (Evansville) have chose their schools and found great fits. Burgess is still available and lists St. Bonaventure, Hofstra and Towson at the top of his growing list.

Khalil Robinson, a top available PG in SC’s 2019 class

Khalil Robinson 2019 5’11 PG Gray Collegiate SC Team United. Khalil is one of the hottest PG’s in SC with strong showings at national tournaments in City of Palms and Chick-Fil-A Classic, and now put up 20 points vs Greensboro Day at the MLK Tourney Town Showcase. The speedy guard showed his toughness in this one as he twisted his ankle at the end of the first half after scoring 12 points. In knowing Khalil for years he wasn’t going to let that stop him as he returned to the court in the 2nd half and nearly led his team to a comeback win scoring 20 points. A defending state champion, alongside Tommy Bruner, Jalen Deloach and Jalil Robinson is prime to make another run at a ring. Currently holds offers from SC State, UNLV, WKU, Charleston Southern, ECU, Charleston, Howard, Hampton, a top available 2019 PG in SC, SC Top 20 2019.
