The DMV area is known for producing elite level talent when it comes to basketball. Big Shots sat down with Team Melo Recruiting Coordinator Dwayne Wise, who is helping bring arguably the best high school basketball game the area has ever seen. Polytech (MD) High School will take on John Carroll (MD) School December 23rd at 4pm located at Morgan State University. This marks the first time in the DMV area that the best public school and best private school have squared off.

Wise is one of the top hoop advocates for the DMV area. We asked Wise why he decided to do just one game and why these two particular teams?

“After sitting down and consulting with head coach Sam Brand (PolyTech) and head coach John Zitto (John Carroll), it was an easy decision,” Wise told Big Shots. “Both Coaches are primed as leaders of the new culture. Coach Brand for instance, has built Polytech from scratch, and he himself is now part of USA Basketball in the off-season.”

Polytech is one of the best public high schools in the DMV area as they are coming off a state championship last season. Coach Zitto has DMV’s top private school and arguably the area’s top back court with Immanuel Quickley and Montez Mathis.

“When we looked at the events for the month of December, we thought this game is what the people wanted,” Wise said. “Top public school meets top private school. It’s two days before Christmas.” Wise told where the game separates itself, “The key players from both teams and their accomplishments thus far.”

Polytech (MD) High School

Demetrius Mims-Polytech has a tremendous leader with senior 6-foot-5 Demetrius Mims. Mims recently committed and signed with Long Beach State. He is coming off a strong Nike EYBL campaign, where he helped lead Team Melo 17U to Peach Jam.

Rahim “Rah Rah” Ali-Polytech’s starting point guard is a six foot sophomore. Wise said that Ali is widely regarded as one of the top five floor generals for the Class of 2020, in the DMV area. He lead the area in assists as a freshman last season.

Justin Lewis-Polytech boasts one of the top sophomores in the nation. The 6-foot-7 forward is coming off of a strong Spring/Summer with Team Melo on the Nike EYBL circuit.,where he was a USA Basketball 16U Finalist. He holds 9 High Major offers. According to 247Sports, Lewis is the No. 55 overall player for the Class of 2020 and the No. 4 player in Maryland.

John Carroll (MD) School

Immanuel Quickley– Wise said that Quickley is a treat to watch. Quickley, who is committed and signed to play for Kentucky, is a consensus top 15 recruit by ESPN, Rivals, and 247Sports. Quickley started on the Adidas Circuit with local program Team BBC. Wise added that Quickley is a complete student off the court.

Montez Mathis– the 6-foot-4 shooting guard recently signed to Rutgers. Mathis is coming off a strong start to his senior campaign. He was honored recently as the Baltimore Catholic League Player of The Week. Mathis is a consensus top 100 recruit by all major scouting services. Mathis is one the top DMV scorers so far this season.

Wise went on to tell Big Shots about the rest of John Carroll’s talent, “A strong candidate for top 100 overall is 6-foot-7 Yavuz Gultekin. Gultekin recently won MVP of DMV Elite 80 that was held in September. John Carroll also has solid D1 prospects in 2019 6-foot point guard Nigel Haughton and 6-foot-6 sophomore power forward Cam Byers that provide depth and experience.”

OneGame2Claim says it all for the title of the event. This is will be the Holiday game to attend in the DMV area.
